Backstage With a Celebrity Stylist

Your tummy isn't ruining the dress. The shapewear under it is pulling the wrong way, and it always will.

If the fabric clings right over your lower belly, if you spend the whole party holding your breath and tugging your hem, or if every waist trainer and control brief you bought rolled down into a tight little rope by dinner, read what a celebrity stylist knows before you give up on fitted dresses for good.

Your tummy isn't ruining the dress. The shapewear under it is pulling the wrong way, and it always will.

The dress looks perfect on the hanger. Then she zips it up, turns sideways in the fitting-room mirror and sees it: the soft bulge over her lower belly, the fabric pulling right there. She sucks in and decides to just hold it all night.

She's already done the sensible things. She bought the waist trainer, the control brief, the bodysuit that promised to smooth everything. It's reasonable to expect something built to flatten your tummy would actually stay flat, and stay put, for one evening.

Celebrity wardrobe stylist Diane Mercer has a three-second trick she puts every client in before an event. Here's why the usual fixes fail, and what she uses instead.

The moment the dress goes on and the evening goes sideways

Diane Mercer has watched it happen in hundreds of fitting rooms. A woman who looks fantastic in a fitted dress turns sideways, sees one small curve over her belly, and her whole face changes.

"From that second on, she's not at the event anymore," Diane says. "She's managing her stomach. Arm across her middle in every photo. Holding her breath when she sits. Tugging the dress down every time she stands up."

The problem isn't her body. It's the six hours of quiet work she's now doing to hide it.

And most women blame themselves, the dress or the last five pounds. Diane blames something else entirely.

"From that second on, she's not at the event anymore. She's managing her stomach."

So why doesn't shapewear fix it?

Why waist trainers, cheap shapewear and bodysuits all quit by dinner

Diane has seen clients arrive in every fix on the market. Waist trainers and belts squash the middle so hard the flesh bulges out above and below, then they ride up and roll. Cheap control briefs roll down from the top within an hour and dig a red line across your waist, and that line shows straight through a jersey dress.

Bodysuits hold, until you need the restroom. Then it's snaps, panic and a ten-minute wrestle in a stall.

And sucking in? "You can't breathe properly and you can't relax," Diane says. "Everyone can see the tension in your shoulders."

They all fail the same way: they squeeze in one straight line, so your tummy has somewhere to escape.

The rolled-down waistband: the most common fix-gone-wrong Diane sees.

What does a garment that leaves no escape route look like?

The real cause: one-direction squeezing gives your tummy an exit

Here's what Diane figured out after years of backstage fittings. A plain control brief pulls straight around you, like a rubber band. Press a balloon with a rubber band and it bulges over the top. That bulge pushes the waistband down, and down it rolls.

The fix is direction. Two bands crossed over the tummy pull diagonally against each other, so the pressure meets in the middle instead of pushing flesh up and out.

Then the waistband has to sit higher, above the belly button, where there's nothing soft underneath to shove it down. Anchored there, it has no reason to roll.

"Crossed, high and wrapped all the way around," Diane says. "That's the whole trick. Get those three right and the dress does the rest."

So which garment is built that way?

The ShapeChic Sculpt Brief: what Diane puts on every client first

Before any client touches the dress, Diane hands her the ShapeChic™ Sculpt Brief.

It's a seamless high-waisted brief. The waistband sits above the belly button. Across the tummy, a 360-degree crossed band of opaque fabric wraps you, with sheer mesh cross panels so it holds firm without bulk.

Pull it up and it takes about three seconds. The crossed band locks the tummy flat, the high waist anchors, and the muffin top just isn't there anymore.

No snaps, no hooks, no rolling. And because it's seamless, there's no line under white trousers, bodycon or a silk slip dress.

"The client looks down, looks up at me, and laughs," Diane says. "Every single time."

But does it actually hold through a whole night?

The sit-down, stand-up test cheap shapewear always fails

Diane doesn't judge shapewear in the mirror. She judges it at the table.

"Sit, stand, sit, reach for a glass, stand for photos. That's where cheap briefs roll." With the Sculpt Brief, the waistband is still above the belly button at the end of the night because the crossed band keeps the pull balanced and the high waist has nothing pushing it down.

The restroom? You pull it down and up like normal underwear. No bodysuit snaps.

It's why more than 91,722 women have stopped sucking in and started wearing it, in sizes S to 8XL and six colors: Black, Beige, Royal Blue, Lilac, Hot Pink and Dark Purple.

Six hours in, the dress still falls straight from hip to hem.

The real test is the dinner table, not the mirror.

What does that feel like on a real Saturday night?

Breathing normally at a wedding in a fitted dress

Picture the wedding, the reunion, the dinner you've been dreading. You zip the dress and turn sideways. Smooth line, straight down.

You leave your arm at your side in the photos. You eat the entree and you sit through the speeches without tugging your hem. You dance, and nothing slides, rolls or pinches.

You stop managing your stomach and start actually being at the party.

And it carries into ordinary days. The jeans that pinched over the waistband. The white pants you saved for "after." The knit dress pushed to the back of the closet. Diane's clients tell her the same thing: they wear the clothes they already own again.

So what's the smartest way to get one?

Before you zip up the next dress, fix what's under it

Go back to that fitting-room mirror. The dress was never the problem, and neither was your tummy. It was shapewear squeezing in one direction and rolling the second you sat down.

Diane's advice is blunt: keep one on and one in the wash. That's why the Buy 2, Get 2 Free bundle is the one most women choose: four briefs, enough for black, beige and a couple of colors for the brighter dresses.

Today's bundle pricing is limited, and popular sizes are already selling through.

Shipping is free, and you have 30 days from delivery to return it if it's not for you. Pick your size, pick your colors, and wear the dress.

Common Questions

Everything readers have asked us so far.

How do I pick my size?
It comes in S to 8XL. Use the size chart on the order page; if you're between sizes, most women go with their usual underwear size for a firm but comfortable hold.
Will it really flatten my tummy?
Yes. The crossed band wraps 360 degrees and pulls diagonally across your tummy, so it lies flat under fitted clothes the moment you pull it up.
How fast will I see a difference?
Right away, in about three seconds. The effect is instant because it's the garment doing the work, every time you wear it.
What if it doesn't work for me?
You have 30 days from delivery to return it. Shipping is free on every order.
Is there anything it won't do?
It shapes; it doesn't change your body permanently. Take it off and you're back to normal, which is why most women keep a few in rotation.

Does it go up into your bra line? I'm short-waisted and that drives me nuts.

@Jen it sits above my belly button, not up by my ribs. I'm 5'2 and it's fine.

Bathroom was the deal breaker with my bodysuit. With this you just pull it down like regular underwear. Huge.

@Amy the mesh panels help a lot, way less sweaty than my old one. Got 4 so I can rotate.
