Living With Fibromyalgia
If every bra flares your fibromyalgia, your body isn't the problem. The hard bits are.
If your skin still shows red grooves long after the bra comes off, if one strap shifting can set your whole shoulder burning, or if you've tried sports bras and bralettes from M&S and Boots and gone back to nothing, read this before you decide a bra just isn't for you any more.

You know the moment. The bra comes off, gets thrown on the sofa, and you sit there with a heat pad, tracing the red line it's left under your bust.
So you did the sensible things. Went up a size, bought the soft-cup ones, tried the sports bras everyone swears by. Every one of them should have helped, and every one still found a way to dig in.
This piece answers one question: why does every bra flare your pain, and what would a bra with nothing hard in it actually feel like on a bad day?

Most days you go without, and you hate that too
With fibromyalgia, a bra isn't just uncomfortable. It's a band of pressure wrapped round the most tender part of you. The wire presses on your ribs. The hooks dig a little row of dents into your spine. The straps leave red ruts across your shoulders.
So you leave it off. But then the school run happens, or the queue at the chemist, and you're aware of everything. The droop. The way your jumper hangs. Crossing your arms so nobody notices.
You've started to think it's you, that your body just can't tolerate support any more. It's not you.
Why the soft bras and sports bras still hurt
Every fix you tried took one hard bit away and left the rest. Wire-free bras still had hooks at the back. Bralettes had thin straps that cut in. Sports bras got rid of the hooks, then squeezed so tightly you could barely breathe, and rolled up under your bust.
Thin elastic bands ride up. Narrow straps carry all the weight on one stripe of skin. A tiny metal hook sits exactly where you're sorest.
It only takes one hard point to set a sensitive body off. That's why 'nearly comfortable' never was. You weren't being fussy. You were feeling every single seam they left in.
One hard point is enough. Every bra you tried kept at least one.

The real cause: pressure piled onto a few small spots
Here's what nobody in the high-street fitting room explains. A bra holds your weight somewhere. In a normal bra that's a few narrow places: two thin straps, a strip of wire, a clasp at your spine. All the load concentrates there, and a sensitive body reads concentrated pressure as pain.
Spread that same weight over wide, soft fabric and there's no single spot left to flare.
That means three things. Nothing rigid: no wire, no hooks, no clasps. Wide, cushioned straps instead of thin ones. And one broad, smooth band and back panel, so the hold comes from the whole width of you rather than a line of elastic.
Same weight, spread wide. No single spot left to flare.

The ShapeChic Original Bra pulls on like a vest
The ShapeChic Original Bra is built exactly that way. There's no wire. There are no hooks and no clasps. You pull it over your head like a vest, so there's no fiddling behind your back with sore shoulders.
The straps are wide and cushioned, so the weight spreads instead of cutting in. The sides come up full and gather the spill under your arms. One wide, smooth back panel flattens back rolls without a single fastening pressing into your spine.
The cups are soft lace, and the lift comes from the shaping of the fabric, not a wire. Sizes run S to 4XL, in seven colours.

What you feel the moment it's on, and what you don't
Put it on and run your fingers along your back. Smooth. No hook bump, no clasp. Lift your arms. The band stays put instead of riding up, because it's wide and sits flat.
Look at your shoulders when you take it off. No red ruts, because the cushioned straps never concentrated the weight. Check under your bust. No groove, because there's no wire there to make one.
Then look in the mirror in a fitted jumper. Lifted. Smooth at the back. The bulge under the arms tucked in. Women tell us they look a dress size or two smaller and stand taller, simply because everything is held where it should be.

Getting dressed on a bad day without bracing yourself
This is what it gives back. Pulling on your favourite jumper and liking what you see. Doing the school run without folding your arms. Sitting through a long hospital appointment without counting the minutes until you can take it off.
On a flare day, you can still wear support, because there's nothing in it to fight with.
You stop choosing between pain and feeling exposed. You stop dressing round your chest. You just get dressed, and feel like yourself again.

Before and after the hard bits came out
Before
- Red grooves under the bust from the wire
- Hook dents and back rolls along the spine
- Thin straps cutting ruts into sore shoulders
After
- No wire, so nothing left to leave a groove
- One wide smooth panel, no hooks, back rolls flattened
- Wide cushioned straps that spread the weight
Wear a bra again, even on a bad day
Pull on your softest jumper and see a lifted, smooth shape looking back. Do the school run with your arms by your sides. Take it off and find no marks at all.
What People Are Saying
“I've got fibro and honestly hadn't worn a bra properly in about two years. This one just goes over your head. No hooks digging in. I actually forgot I had it on.”
“The straps are lovely and wide. My shoulders are usually the worst bit and they've been fine.”
“Bought it for my back rolls if I'm honest. They're gone under a t-shirt. My daughter asked if I'd lost weight!”
“Bit nervous ordering as I'm a 4XL and nothing ever fits. It does. Full sides keep everything in. Tracked and well packed, came in about 9 days.”
“Not as much lift as my old wired one but I don't care, it doesn't hurt. That's worth more to me. Ordering the grey next.”

Does it actually stay down at the back? Every sports bra I own rolls up.
@Tracey mine doesn't, the band's really wide so it sits flat. Was my worry too.
Not fibro but I've got a bad shoulder after surgery. Not having to reach behind for hooks is a game changer.
I sized up as I was between sizes and it's perfect. Size chart is worth checking.
Got three in the offer, wearing the black one now. Lace is soft, not scratchy at all, which surprised me.
Is it see-through under white tops? Thinking of the nude one.
