A Celebrity Lingerie Stylist Says It's Not Your Body. Your Bra Is Making You Look Two Dress Sizes Bigger.

If two rolls show through the back of every fitted dress, if you've started deleting every side-on photo before anyone else sees it, or if buying the dress a size up only made you look bigger, give me five minutes before you decide your body is the problem.

A Celebrity Lingerie Stylist Says It's Not Your Body. Your Bra Is Making You Look Two Dress Sizes Bigger.

You've just watched me snip a thin black elastic off a mannequin's back. The dress dropped into one smooth line, and nothing underneath got smaller.

I know what you've tried, because every woman in my fitting chair has tried the same things: the bigger dress, the shapewear, the expensive bra, the diet. Each one made sense. Each one should have worked if the problem were your body.

So here's the question I'll answer: if it isn't your body, what is making you look two dress sizes bigger in your clothes, and how do you take it away?

One Snip of Black Elastic Changed the Whole Dress

You've just watched me do it, so let me slow it down.

On my mannequin: a fitted ivory jersey dress, the kind most women I dress won't go near. Round its back, a thin black elastic, pulled to the tension of an ordinary bra band. Two soft rolls push straight through the fabric, just below the shoulder blades.

Then I snip it. The dress drops into one smooth line from shoulder blade to waist. I turn it side-on and the front changes too. Same dress. Same shape underneath. The only thing I took away was the band.

I've stood behind thousands of women in fitting rooms who blame their back, their age, their weight. Let me show you what I see from behind.

So why did every fix you tried leave the rolls exactly where they were?

Why a Size Up, Spanx, an £80 Bra and Dieting All Failed

Every fix women tell me about makes sense. None of them touches the band.

Buying the dress a size up. The rolls don't go anywhere. The dress just hangs off your shoulders and you look bigger, not smaller.

Spanx. It holds for an hour, then rolls down under your bust, and by the time you sit down to eat you can't take a full breath.

The £80 designer bra. Lovely lace, lovely box. Turn it over: the same narrow band, the same underwire. Same rolls, same drop.

Dieting. It comes off your face and hands first. Back fat is the last thing to go, so the rolls stay while you go hungry.

You didn't fail at any of these. Every one fought your body. Not one changed the thing squeezing it.

Why a Size Up, Spanx, an £80 Bra and Dieting All Failed
Four fixes, one thing in common: none of them changed the band.

If the band is the problem, what exactly is it doing to your back?

A Thin Band Makes Rolls, and a Wire Lets the Bust Drop

Here's how I explain it in the studio.

Take a peach-pink balloon. Cinch a thin black elastic round it and it bulges into two lobes, one above, one below. That's your back in a narrow bra band. The soft tissue has nowhere to go but over the edge, and a fitted dress shows every ridge.

Now the front. An underwire is a thin curve of metal. It shapes, but it can't carry the weight of a bust, so the bust sinks to elbow height and your waist seems to start under your arms.

A thin band squeezes your back into rolls and the wire lets your bust drop. Together they make you look two dress sizes bigger in your clothes.

Put the same balloon under a wide band and the lobes vanish. It's the bra, not your body.

It's the bra, not your body.

Thin elastic: two lobes. Wide band: smooth.

So what does a bra built around a wide band actually look like?

The ShapeChic Original Lifts From the Band, Not a Wire

That's why I put women in the ShapeChic Original.

Turn it over first. Instead of a strip, the back is one wide piece. The pressure a thin band drives into a single line gets spread across your whole back, so there's no edge for anything to bulge over. Smooth back.

Then the front. There's no wire doing the lifting. The wide band does it, holding the bust up from underneath, all the way round.

Here's the demo from the video. Two grapefruits in a thin mesh bag sag to 30 cm on my tape measure. The same grapefruits under a wide band: 18 cm. Twelve centimetres of lift, with no wire anywhere.

The fabric is soft and seamless, so it disappears under jersey. Sizes run S to 4XL, and the wide band adjusts.

But what does it do on a real woman, in a real fitted dress?

Same Dress, Same Weight, Two Sizes Smaller From Behind

I don't ask women to take my word for it. I put them in front of a three-way mirror.

So here's mine. I'm 55. Same fitted ivory dress, same weight I was this morning. In my old wired bra, two ridges sat across my back and my bust rested at elbow height. Side-on, I looked like a woman squeezed into a dress a size too small.

Black Original on underneath. From behind: one line, shoulder blade to waist. Side-on: bust back up where it belongs, so my waist shows again, right where it should start.

Two dress sizes smaller in the same dress, at the same weight. Not one pound lost. One band changed.

That's the picture my clients send me afterwards. The back they'd given up on, smooth, in a photo they actually keep.

Not one pound lost. One band changed.

So what do women actually do differently once the rolls are gone?

The Dress You Gave Up On Goes Back On, No Cardigan

Here's what women tell me they do first.

They take the fitted dress out of the back of the wardrobe, the one they bought for a wedding and spent the whole day hiding under a cardigan. They put it on over the Original and turn side-on in the hall mirror. Then they leave the cardigan on the hook.

At the table, they sit down and breathe. No shapewear rolling under the bust, no wire pressing into the ribs by pudding. Just a soft wide band that stays where it's put.

And when someone takes a photo from the side, they keep it.

That's the part I care about. Not the bra. The woman who stops standing behind her sister in every picture and starts standing beside her.

Side-on, and worth keeping.

So what's the one practical thing to do before you buy another dress?

Before You Buy Another Dress a Size Up, Change the Band

Go back to that cardigan over the dress. You wore it because you thought your back and your bust were the problem. They weren't. A thin band and a wire were.

You can keep buying dresses a size up and keep deleting the side-on photos. Or you can change the one thing that's been making you look bigger.

Today the ShapeChic Original is Buy 1, Get 2 FREE: one for every day, one for the fitted dress, one in the wash. The offer ends today. Delivery is free, and you've got 30 days to try it. If you don't see a smoother back in the mirror, send it back for a full refund.

The Same Dress, Before and After the Band

Before

  • Two rolls ridging through the back of every fitted dress
  • Bust sitting at elbow height, waist lost
  • A cardigan over every dress, even in July

After

  • One smooth line from shoulder blade to waist
  • Bust lifted from the band, waist back where it belongs
  • The cardigan stays on the hook and the dress shows

Wear the Fitted Dress and Keep the Side-On Photo

Pull on the dress you've been saving, turn side-on in the hall mirror and see one smooth line down your back. Go out without the cardigan, sit down to dinner and breathe properly. When someone snaps a photo from the side, let them, and keep it.

What People Are Saying

“Honestly thought the balloon thing was a gimmick. Then I turned sideways in the bathroom mirror and just stood there. Wore my green dress to my niece's wedding and the cardigan stayed in my bag all day.”

Sue H., Bolton

“No wire digging in, no lines across my back under my work top. That's all I wanted really.”

Karen M., Norwich

“I'm a 4XL and I've spent years in black tunics because of my back. My daughter took a picture of me at her birthday meal from the side and I didn't ask her to delete it. First time in ages. Bit snug the first day till I loosened the band a notch.”

Joanne P., Swansea

“Paid a fortune for a fancy bra last year and it did exactly what my cheap ones did. This one actually holds me up without a wire. Can't explain it, it just does.”

Linda R., Stirling

“Bought it for the rolls, kept wearing it because it's comfy. Got three in the offer so there's always one clean.”

Angela T., Leeds

Common Questions

Everything readers have asked us so far.

How do I choose my size?
Sizes run from S to 4XL. Pick your usual size using the size guide at checkout; the wide band adjusts if you're between sizes.
Will it really smooth the rolls on my back?
The back is one wide piece, so the pressure that a thin band pushes into a single line is spread across your whole back. With no edge to bulge over, the back of a fitted dress sits smooth.
How quickly will I see a difference?
The moment you put it on. Turn side-on in the mirror in a fitted dress and you'll see the smoother back and lifted bust straight away.
What if it doesn't work for me?
You've got 30 days to try it. If you're not 100% satisfied, send it back for a full refund, no questions asked.
Is there anything it won't do?
It won't change your weight or your body. It changes the band and the lift, which is what's been making you look bigger in your clothes.

Does it really lift with no wire? I'm a G cup and wire is the only thing I've ever trusted
