Fit & Comfort Investigation

Measured three times, given three sizes, and still left with red marks? Your size was never the problem.

If you peel your bra off to deep red grooves under your bust and dents in your shoulders, if you've stood in a department-store fitting room while a tape measure gave you yet another new size, or if every 'properly fitted' bra still digs in, read this before you decide your body is the problem.

Measured three times, given three sizes, and still left with red marks? Your size was never the problem.

You've done everything right. You went to the department store, stood in the cubicle with your arms up, and let a fitter wrap a tape round your ribs. Then you did it again somewhere else, and got a different size. And a third time. Three sizes, and every one of them still cuts in.

It was a reasonable thing to expect. You were told most women wear the wrong size, so you paid for the fitting, bought the 'right' bra, and waited for the comfort to arrive. It never came. Just red lines, a sore back and a drawer full of bras you were sure would be the one.

So if three professional fittings couldn't fix it, what's actually doing the damage? The answer isn't on the label.

Three fittings, three sizes, and the same red grooves every time

Linda is 54 and lives just outside Leeds. She's been measured at a big department store on the high street, at an independent shop, and once more on a friend's advice. A 36DD. Then a 34E. Then a 38D.

Every bra came home in a bag with tissue paper. Every bra ended up the same way. The band riding up her back. The wire stabbing under her arm when she reached into the car on the school run with her granddaughter. Straps sawing into her shoulders until she was hooking a thumb under them in the queue at Boots.

And when she finally took it off, the mirror showed it all. Red lines. Dents. Skin that looked like it had been tied up with string.

So why didn't the 'right' size fix any of it?

Why going up a size, or down one, never stops the digging

Like most women, Linda tried everything she was told. A bigger band so it wouldn't cut. It rode up her back. A smaller band so it would stay put. It left a deep groove she could trace with her finger. Bigger cups, smaller cups, 'minimiser', 'full support'. Wider hooks. The loosest hook. The tightest hook.

None of it worked, and here's why. Every one of those bras was built the same way: a wire, two thin straps and a narrow band yanked tight by hooks.

Change the number on the label and you only move where the pressure lands. The wire still presses. The straps still carry all the weight on a strip of elastic. The band still squeezes your back into rolls. A drawer full of 'properly fitted' bras is a drawer full of the same design in different sizes.

Changing the size only moves where the bra hurts you.

Why going up a size, or down one, never stops the digging
A drawer full of 'properly fitted' bras. Same design, different labels.

If the size isn't to blame, what is?

The real culprit: a design that pins your weight to three thin points

Think about where a traditional bra actually holds you. A hard wire under each breast. Two narrow straps on your shoulders. One thin band clamped round your ribs by hooks. That's it. All the weight of a fuller bust, hanging off a few narrow lines.

That's why you get grooves in exactly those places. It's physics, not your figure. Narrow pressure points dig in; wide, soft surfaces spread the load.

After 50, it gets worse. Skin is softer and marks more easily, and a fuller bust or a little more round the middle gives a tight band more to squeeze. So the band bites, the flesh spills out over the top and sides, and the back rolls show through your jumper.

A measuring tape can't fix a design problem. Only a different design can.

Narrow lines dig in. Wide, soft panels spread the weight.

So what does a bra look like when it spreads the weight instead?

The ShapeChic Original Bra: no wire, no hooks, nothing to dig

The ShapeChic Original Bra takes away every part that was hurting Linda. There's no wire, so nothing stabs under your arm. The lift comes from the shape and the fabric itself.

There are no hooks and no clasps. You pull it on over your head like a vest. No fiddling behind your back, no tight hook-and-eye band clamping your ribs.

The straps are wide and cushioned, so the weight spreads across your shoulders instead of sawing into one line. Full sides gather the spill under your arms. One wide, smooth back panel lies flat and smooths away back rolls. And soft lace cups mean it still looks pretty.

Sizes run from S to 4XL in seven colours.

But does it actually stop the marks?

What happens to the red marks when the wire and hooks go

Look in the mirror after a long stretch in your old bra and you can map every part of it on your skin: a curve under each breast, two dents on the shoulders, a ring round the back.

The ShapeChic leaves nowhere for those marks to come from. No wire, so no curve pressed into you. No hooks, so no clamped band and no row of little dents down your spine. Wide cushioned straps spread the weight across your shoulders, so there's no single strip carrying the load.

Then look at your outline. The full sides hold in what used to spill under your arms. The smooth back panel lies flat, so the rolls that showed through a fine-knit jumper smooth out. The lift stays without a wire digging in. Different design, different result.

Back in a fitted jumper, standing tall, feeling like herself again

For years Linda chose clothes to hide her bra. Baggy tops. Cardigans over everything. Nothing fitted, because fitted showed the rolls, the bulges and the line of the band.

Now she pulls on the soft fitted jumper she'd stopped wearing. No back rolls through the knit. No spill at the sides. A smooth, lifted line that makes her look slimmer, as though she's dropped a couple of dress sizes, and she stands taller because nothing is dragging on her shoulders.

She does the school run, the big shop, a long lunch with her sister, and never once hooks a thumb under a strap.

That's the part she talks about most. Not the bra. The feeling of being comfortable in her own clothes again.

Stop paying for new sizes of the same painful design

You don't need a fourth fitting. You don't need another 'properly fitted' bra in a new size that cuts in exactly like the last one. The size was never the problem. The wire, the thin straps and the hook-and-eye band were.

Every week you keep wearing them is another week of red grooves, sore shoulders and tops chosen to hide your back.

What People Are Saying

“I'd been measured three times and got three different sizes. This is the first bra I've taken off without red lines everywhere. Honestly wish I'd found it years ago.”

Linda H., LeedsVerified

“No hooks! My shoulders are bad so getting it on over my head is so much easier. Wore my grey jumper for the first time in ages.”

Sue M., NorwichVerified

“I'm a G cup normally and was sure a wire-free bra wouldn't hold me. It does. Not quite as pointy as my old ones but I don't care, it doesn't hurt.”

Karen P., SwanseaVerified

“The back is what got me. No rolls showing through my top. My daughter said I looked slimmer and asked what I'd done.”

Janet R., BoltonVerified

“Came tracked and well packed. Ordered the 2XL, fits lovely. Got the nude, black and a dusky pink one with the offer.”

Common Questions

Everything readers have asked us so far.

How do I pick my size?
Choose from S to 4XL using the size guide on the offer page. Because there's no wire or hooked band, it's far more forgiving than a traditional bra size.
Will it really stop the red marks?
The marks come from the wire, thin straps and tight hooked band, and the ShapeChic has none of them. The wide straps and smooth back panel spread the weight instead of digging in.
How soon will I notice a difference?
The first time you take it off and look in the mirror. There's nothing narrow pressing into your skin to leave a groove.
What if it doesn't suit me?
You have 30 days from delivery to return it. Delivery is free on every order.
Is it as structured as an underwired bra?
No, and that's the point. It gives a soft, natural lift rather than the rigid shape a wire forces, so if you want a very pointed, sculpted look this isn't that bra.

Does it actually lift though? Every wire-free bra I've tried just squashes me flat.

How do you know your size if there's no band and cup? I'm a 38E in normal bras.

Sceptical as I've wasted so much on bras. Bought the 3 so I'll report back.

Can wear my fitted tops again without a cardi over them. That alone was worth it for me.
