Here’s what every full-busted woman sees when she tries on a fitted knit. A ridge where the band cuts across her back, a roll above and below it, a bump under each arm, the outline of every cup edge. So the knit goes back on the hanger, and the baggy top comes out again.
It isn’t your body. A full bust is heavy, so most bras hold it with a tight, narrow band and firm cups with hard edges. The band digs in and pushes soft skin into rolls, and the cup edges print straight through thin fabric. Plenty of “smoothing” bras just add more foam, which makes you look bigger up front.
So we tested what smoothing actually looks like on a full bust. We put 17 smoothing bras on 35 women from DD to G, aged 40 to 66. We photographed every tester from behind and side-on in the same fitted ribbed knit, in every bra. Then we compared all 1,190 photos.
Most bras hid a little. A few hid a lot, with trade-offs. One made the bra invisible on 32 of 35 women, and lifted them at the same time.
How we tested smoothing
Each finalist was worn for at least four full days per tester, photographed from behind and side-on in a fitted knit, and scored out of 10.
Back smoothing
Same knit, same light, same pose. Any roll, ridge or bulge across the back and under the arms cost points.
Invisible edges
Cup edges, strap lines and band seams that printed through thin fabric, scored from close-up photos.
Lift
A smooth back with a low, heavy bust is half a win. We measured lift with a fitter’s tape.
Comfort while smoothing
Smoothing by squeezing isn’t worth it. We logged digging, heat and tightness after every full day of wear.
