There’s a moment most women over 60 know too well. Arms twisted behind your back, fingers fumbling for a hook you can’t see, a shoulder that won’t go one inch further. Some of my patients had started fastening their bras at the front, then twisting them round and dragging them up. Some had given up wearing one at all.
It isn’t just annoying. Stiff shoulders and arthritic hands turn back hooks into a daily strain on exactly the joints that already hurt. And the bras most women switch to, soft pull-ons and leisure bras, solve the hooks but give up on support. The bust drops, the shoulders round forward and the upper back takes the strain instead.
So we looked for a bra that fixes both. We tested 15 bras on 33 women aged 60 to 79, many with arthritis, a frozen-shoulder history or past shoulder surgery. We timed each tester putting on every bra, measured how far her shoulders sat from the wall, and had her wear each finalist for at least four full days. We kept one back-hook classic in the final five so you can see the difference.
Most front-closure bras were easier to put on but did nothing for posture. One was the easiest of all, and it pulled our testers’ shoulders back into line.
How we tested for women over 60
Each finalist was worn for at least four full days per tester and scored out of 10 on the four things our testers struggle with most.
Easy to fasten
Timed from picking the bra up to fully fastened, with every twist, reach and fumble logged. Testers with sore hands scored every closure.
Posture support
Shoulder-to-wall distance, braless and in each bra. Bras that let the shoulders round forward lost points.
Lift
Bust height measured with a fitter’s tape. A soft bra that’s easy to put on but lets you sag isn’t the answer.
Value
What you pay per bra, multi-buy deals included, and whether you can send it back.

ShapeChic™ Posture Bra
Best for: stiff shoulders and sore hands that still want real support

The ShapeChic Posture Bra was the fastest bra in our test to put on, about 9 seconds on average, and the only front-closure bra that also straightened our testers’ shoulders.
Everything happens at the front. Three hooks at centre chest, with eight levels of adjustment, right where you can see them. You slip the straps on like a cardigan, bring the two sides together and fasten. No twisting, no reaching, no calling for help. Testers with arthritis in their fingers said it was the first bra in years they could do up on the first try.
Then it goes to work on your posture. Two wide straps cross in an X over the upper back and draw your shoulders back and down the moment you fasten it. In side-on photos, testers who’d developed a stoop stood visibly straighter, and several said they looked ten years younger. “I look like I did before my shoulder went,” one tester told us.
It lifts without a wire, too. A firm, wide underbust band carries the bust’s weight off your shoulders, so there are no painful strap grooves, and the high sides smooth the back and underarms. The wireless, seamless moulded cups have removable pads and stay soft against sensitive skin.
Sizes run S to 5XL, up to H cups, in Nude and Black. Today it’s Buy 1, Get 1 Free: one on, one in the wash, for less per bra than any other bra on this list.
“After my shoulder surgery I had to ask my husband to fasten my bra every day. Now I do it myself in seconds, and I’m standing straighter than I have in years.”

Exquisite Form Fully Front-Close Posture Bra
Best for: a familiar, budget front-close bra

The Exquisite Form Fully is the front-close bra many of our testers remember from the catalogues, and it’s still a solid choice. It fastens at the front, it gave a modest posture nudge, and it’s around $38.
Testers found the front fastening fiddlier than our #1, especially with sore knuckles: 22 seconds on average. The pull-back was gentle, and most of our panel found the look old-fashioned.
What we loved
- Front closure
- Modest posture support
- Fair price
Where it fell short
- Fiddlier to fasten with sore hands
- Gentle pull-back
- Old-fashioned look
Bottom line: A reliable old favourite, but it does less for your shoulders than it promises.
Compare with our #1 pickGlamorise MagicLift Front-Close Posture Back Bra
Best for: maximum coverage and a firm feel

Glamorise’s MagicLift Front-Close Posture Back is the most supportive of the conventional front-close bras, with a firm build and a posture back that helped most testers sit a little straighter.
It took testers 26 seconds on average to fasten, the longest of the front-closers, and several needed two or three tries. It’s also bulky under clothes and around $55 for one bra.
What we loved
- Firm support
- Some posture help
- Full coverage
Where it fell short
- Slowest front-closer to fasten: 26 sec
- Bulky under clothes
- Around $55 for one bra
Bottom line: Supportive, but not as easy as a front-close bra should be.
Compare with our #1 pickLeading Lady Brigitte Front-Closure Bra
Best for: lounging and sleeping

Leading Lady’s Brigitte is soft, simple and quick to fasten, 16 seconds on average, and at around $32 it’s the lowest-priced of the rivals.
It’s a leisure bra, though. It gave almost no lift to fuller busts and did nothing for rounded shoulders, so testers who wore it all day said their upper backs ached more, not less.
What we loved
- Soft and gentle
- Quick front fastening
- Low price
Where it fell short
- Almost no lift
- No posture support
- Upper-back ache got worse for some testers
Bottom line: Easy to put on, but it gives up on support to get there.
Compare with our #1 pickPlaytex 18 Hour Ultimate Lift & Support Wireless Bra
Best for: women who can still reach behind them comfortably

We kept the Playtex 18 Hour in our final five as the back-hook benchmark. It’s a dependable wire-free bra with wide straps and firm side panels, and plenty of our testers had worn one for decades.
For this panel, the hooks were the problem. It took 47 seconds on average to fasten, more than five times as long as our #1. A third of testers couldn’t fasten it behind them at all without twisting it round to the front first.
What we loved
- Supportive wire-free build
- Wide straps
- Easy to find in stores
Where it fell short
- Back hooks: 47 sec average to fasten
- A third of testers couldn’t fasten it behind them
- No posture help
Bottom line: A good bra if your shoulders still reach. For most of our testers, they didn’t.
Compare with our #1 pickHow to choose a bra after 60
Five things to check, from a former physio who has helped a lot of women get dressed again after shoulder surgery.
Fasten at the front
Reaching behind your back asks your shoulders for the movement that stiffens first. A front closure lets you fasten where you can see, with your elbows down.
Hooks you can see and feel
Arthritis turns tiny, hidden fastenings into a fight. Try any closure with your eyes shut: if it’s fiddly then, it’ll be fiddly every day.
Don’t trade support for ease
Soft pull-ons are easy, but a bust that drops pulls your shoulders forward and rounds your upper back. You need both.
Let the band carry the weight
Thinner skin and tender shoulders bruise under narrow straps. A firm, wide band should do the lifting so the straps barely have to.
Stand side-on to the mirror
Your ear should sit above your shoulder, not in front of it. The right bra gets you closer the moment it’s on.
What women over 60 say about the Posture Bra
From ShapeChic’s verified buyers (4.8 out of 5 from 7,518 reviews) and our own testers.
I can dress myself again
My arthritis made back hooks impossible. These hooks are right in front of me and I’m done in seconds. I feel independent again.
Standing straighter at 66
I’d started to stoop and hated it. This pulls my shoulders back the minute it’s on. My friends say I look ten years younger.
Perfect after shoulder surgery
After my rotator cuff repair I couldn’t reach behind me at all. This was the only bra I could put on alone, and it supports me properly.
No more strap dents
The wide band holds everything up, so my shoulders don’t ache and the straps don’t dig. So comfortable.
My daughter noticed
She said, “Mom, you’re standing so tall.” It’s this bra. Easy hooks, soft cups, and my blouses look so much better.
Bought two, then two more
With the buy one get one free I stocked up in Nude and Black. The easiest, most comfortable bra I’ve owned in years.

Our verdict: the best front-closure bra over 60

After timing 33 women over 60 in 15 bras, the winner did two jobs no other bra could do together. The ShapeChic Posture Bra was the easiest to put on and the only one that straightened rounded shoulders, with real lift and nothing digging in.
If getting dressed has become a daily fight, or you’ve caught yourself starting to stoop, you don’t have to accept either. Nine seconds at the front, and you’re dressed and standing tall.
