Almost every woman I fit between 45 and 60 says some version of this: “Nothing fits anymore and I don’t know why.” Her band size hasn’t moved much. Her cup size might even be the same. But every bra in her drawer suddenly digs, slips, gapes or leaves her looking lumpy in her favourite tops.
Here’s why. As oestrogen drops, breast tissue gets softer and heavier and sits lower, so the old bra has to work twice as hard to lift it. Weight shifts to the back and sides, so a thin band now cuts a line straight through it. Skin gets more sensitive, so an underwire that was fine at 40 feels like a crowbar at 52. And then there are the hot flashes, which turn thick foam cups into a personal sauna.
So we rebuilt our test around those four changes. We put 19 popular comfort bras on 32 women aged 42 to 64, all in perimenopause or past it. Each one wore every finalist through five weeks of real life, sleep included.
Most bras fixed one problem and made another worse. One fixed all four.
How we tested for menopause bodies
Each finalist was worn for at least five full days per tester and scored out of 10 on the four changes our testers struggle with most.
Lift for a softer bust
Measured bust height before and after with a fitter’s tape. Soft bras that let a heavier bust drop scored low.
Cool through hot flashes
Testers logged how each bra felt during hot flashes and night sweats. Heat-trapping foam and sweaty bands lost points.
Gentle on sensitive skin
Red marks, itching, wire pressure and strap grooves, checked at the end of every day.
Smooth over back & side rolls
Back photos in a fitted top. Any band that cut a line or pushed skin over the top cost points.

ShapeChic™ Original Bra
Best for: a heavier bust, back rolls and hot flashes, all at once

If menopause changed your shape, this is the bra that changes it back. The ShapeChic Original Bra was the only finalist that scored above 9 on all four menopause tests.
Lift first. Firm side panels gather a softer bust in and up, and our fitter’s tape showed it lifting a heavier bust more than any other wire-free bra in the test. Testers who’d resigned themselves to a low, flat silhouette saw their old shape come back in the mirror.
Then the back. Instead of a thin band slicing through new back fat, a single wide, soft panel lies flat across it. In fitted-top photos it removed the bra bulge on 29 of our 32 testers. “I can wear my knit dresses again” was the most common note in the logs.
And the heat. The nylon-spandex body breathes and dries fast, with no thick foam to trap warmth. During hot flashes it was rated the coolest bra in the test, and a third of testers ended up sleeping in it.
No wire to press on tender skin, no hooks for stiff fingers, cushioned straps that don’t groove. Sizes run S to 4XL. And with Buy 1, Get 2 Free today, you can have one on, one in the wash and one spare for less than a single department-store bra.
“Since menopause every bra has felt like a punishment. This is the first one I put on and actually relaxed. And I don’t sweat through it.”

Knix WingWoman Contour Bra
Best for: night sweats, if you have a smaller bust

Knix is known for moisture-wicking fabrics, and it showed: the WingWoman was one of the better bras in our hot-flash logs, and the wire-free frame was gentle on sensitive skin.
But it’s designed more for shape than lift. Our fuller, softer testers said it didn’t hold them up the way they needed, and the conventional back band still dug a line through back rolls. Around $68 for one bra stings, too.
What we loved
- Good at handling sweat
- Gentle wire-free frame
- Smooth cups under tees
Where it fell short
- Not enough lift for a heavier bust
- Band still cut into back rolls
- Around $68 for one bra
Bottom line: A good choice for night sweats on a smaller frame, less so if your bust has dropped.
Compare with our #1 pickHoneylove CrossOver Bra
Best for: special occasions under fitted dresses

The CrossOver is a strong smoother, and its firm, sculpting build made fitted dresses look sleek in our photos.
That firmness is also the catch. Testers found it warm during hot flashes, harder to get on and off, and not something they wanted to wear on an ordinary day. At around $69 it’s an occasion bra, not an everyday one.
What we loved
- Very good smoothing
- Sleek under fitted dresses
- Wire-free
Where it fell short
- Runs warm during hot flashes
- Firm and fiddly to put on
- Around $69 for one bra
Bottom line: Lovely for a wedding, too much for a Tuesday.
Compare with our #1 pickBali Comfort Revolution ComfortFlex Fit Wireless Bra
Best for: lounging on bad-skin days

Soft, stretchy and easy on tender skin, the Comfort Revolution is pleasant to wear around the house.
For menopause bodies it simply doesn’t do enough. A heavier bust sank in it, the band rolled up on half our testers, and it did nothing for back rolls.
What we loved
- Very soft on sensitive skin
- Breathable
- Affordable
Where it fell short
- Little lift for a heavier bust
- Band rolled up on half our testers
- No smoothing
Bottom line: A nice lounge bra, but not the answer for a changing shape.
Compare with our #1 pickPlaytex 18 Hour Ultimate Lift & Support Wireless Bra
Best for: maximum coverage, if heat isn’t an issue

The 18 Hour gives full coverage and reasonable support with wide straps, which is why so many women reach for it.
In our hot-flash logs it was one of the warmest bras tested, and the three-hook band pressed into back rolls instead of smoothing them.
What we loved
- Full coverage
- Wide straps
- Easy to find
Where it fell short
- Warm during hot flashes
- Band pressed into back rolls
- A frumpy look
Bottom line: Familiar, but it feels like a bra from before menopause, not for it.
Compare with our #1 pickWhat your bra needs to do after 40
Menopause changes the job a bra has to do. These are the five things to check before you buy another one.
Lift from the sides, not just the straps
A heavier bust pulls down on the straps and grooves your shoulders. Side panels and a supportive band should carry that weight instead.
A wide band for back and side rolls
Weight shifts to the back during menopause. A wide, soft panel lies flat over it; a thin band cuts a line through it.
Breathable fabric, no thick foam
Hot flashes and night sweats make thick padding unbearable. Look for light, breathable fabric that dries fast.
No wire pressing on tender skin
Skin often gets thinner and more sensitive. Wire-free support that still lifts is the kindest option.
Easy on, easy off
Stiff shoulders and sore hands make back hooks a daily fight. Pull-on or front-friendly designs save a lot of frustration.
What women in menopause say about the Original Bra
From ShapeChic’s verified buyers (4.92 out of 5 from 16,521+ reviews) and our own testers.
Finally, no more sweating through my bra
Hot flashes all day and my padded bras were soaked. This one breathes. I can actually get through a workday without peeling it off.
My shape came back
Everything had dropped and gone soft after menopause. In this bra my bust sits where it used to. I stood in front of the mirror for ages.
No more back fat lines
The wide back is amazing. My T-shirts don’t show that awful ridge anymore. I feel put-together again.
Gentle on my skin
My skin got so sensitive that wires left bruises. Nothing digs in this bra, and it still holds me up.
I sleep in it
I need a little support in bed now, and this is soft enough to sleep in without overheating.
Wish I’d found it years ago
Bought one, came back for the three-pack deal. Comfortable, cool and pretty. My old bras went in the bin.

Our verdict: the best bra for menopause

Menopause changes four things at once, and most bras only handle one. The ShapeChic Original Bra handled all four: it lifted a softer bust, stayed cool through hot flashes, smoothed new back rolls and never pressed on tender skin.
If your bras started feeling wrong somewhere in your forties, it isn’t you. Your body changed and your bra didn’t. This is the bra our testers were still wearing long after the test ended, and today three cost less than one department-store bra.
